Es ist Mitte Juli und die Saison der Open Air Festivals. Anfang Juni besuchten wir das grösste Country Open Air, das CMA Music Festival. Ich geniesse jedes Jahr diese Tage in Nashville, weg von den täglichen Alltagspflichten, Tage voller Country Musik und Sonne, die wir in der Schweiz so vermissten und Wärme, die der Seele gut tut.
Begonnen hat das Jahr im Januar mit der Reise an die Blues Challenge in Memphis, kurz darauf folgten der Mardi Gras und das Jazz Festival in New Orleans. Auch waren wir dieses Jahr wieder am Country Thunder in Florence Arizona und am Stagecoach Festival im kalifornischen Palm Springs mit einem gigantischen Line Up, das gemäss Gerüchten nächstes Jahr noch übertroffen wird mit einem Auftritt von Garth Brooks – who knows!
Schon jetzt haben wir wieder alle Tickets und Hotels eingekauft für die Festival-Saison 2014. Auch für Nashville sind die Gold Tickets gekauft und die Hotelzimmer blockiert, und obschon wir zur Zeit immer noch von der Musik am diesjährigen Festival träumen, haben wir schon einige Reservation fürs 2014 bekommen von Country Music Fans, die dieses Jahr nicht mitkommen konnten. Am meisten hat mich dieses Jahr gefreut, dass unser Reisebüro nach über 20 Jahren, in denen ich Reisen ans CMA Music Festival organisiere, auf der CMA-Homepage als offizielles Reisebüro aufgeführt wird.

It is mid-July and the Music Open Air Season. In June I attended the biggest Country Festival, the CMA Country Music Festival. I love those days in Nashville, far from daily business, those days filled with country music and sunshine that we miss so dearly back home. It's good for the soul, too.
This year started out with a trip to the Blues Challenge in Memphis, shortly after that came Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival in New Orleans. Also, we attended Country Thunder in Florence, Arizona, again, and also the Stagecoach Festival in Palm Springs, California. This event had an incredible line-up, and rumor has it that they will try and surpass it next year with a performance by Garth Brooks – who knows!
We have already purchased all tickets and hotel rooms for the 2014 festival season. In Nashville, we have bought the Gold Tickets and reserved the hotel rooms and although at this time, we are still reminiscing this years' festival, we have already received some bookings for next year: Some country music fans couldn't make it this time, but are determined to come next year. I was totally pleased to find out that after more than 20 years of booking trips to the CMA music festival, our travel agency is now listed among the official partners on the CMA homepage.

Es war ein tolles Fest, das CMA Music Festival 2013. Wir, das waren ca. 60 Schweizer Country-Fans, die das Festival live miterlebt haben. Gemäss CMA-Informationen war dieses Jahr mit 80‘000 Fans pro Tag die maximale Kapazität des Anlasses erreicht. Die Dimensionen dieses Festivals sind immens und für Ausstehende fast nicht mehr vorstellbar.
Das Wetter war dieses Jahr wie auch in der Schweiz etwas durchzogen und wir haben von prallem Sonnenschein über Donner und Blitz mit abwechslungsweise mildem Wetter ohne Temperaturen über 30 Grad alles erlebt. Der Musik tat dies keinen Abbruch, sondern wir genossen es, nicht gebraten zu werden an der Openair- Bühne Riverfront.
Den Anfang des CMA Music Festival an der Riverfront machte Sara Evans. Das tägliche Programm war gespickt mit Newcomern, aber auch mit „gestandenen“ Namen, von denen wir schon viele in der Schweiz geniessen konnten. Den Abschluss hätte eigentlich Ronnie Milsap machen sollen, doch der blinde Musiker ist aus unkommentiertem Grund nicht erschienen und so sorgten Lonestar mit ihrem „alten“ Sänger Richie McDonald für den krönenden Abschluss auf der Riverfront Stage.
Schon die Spezialkonzerte kurz vor dem offiziellen Beginn des CMA Festivals sind eine Reise wert. Am Dienstagabend in der Opry konnte man ein Line-up der Superklasse geniessen unter anderem mit Carrie Underwood und den Rascall Flatts. Die Konzerthalle Grand Ol’ Opry ist eigentlich die neue Opry, die alte Opry ist und bleibt das Ryman Auditorium. Hier findet jedes Jahr die Mary Stuart Late Night Show statt, ein Must für jeden Schweizer Country Fan. Das Beste der diesjährigen Late Night waren für mich die Mavericks in ihrer alten Besetzung und mit ihrem einzigartigen Mavericks-Sound.
Dieses Jahr wurden wir auch noch schweizerisch verwöhnt. Rolf Fritschi hatte die einmalige Gelegenheit, bei der Fanclub-Party von Billy Yates mit der unglaublichen Band von Billy zwei Lieder zu singen. Was für eine Ehre für Rolf! Mit der lautstarken Unterstützung des anwesenden Schweizer Fanclubs war sein Auftritt ein riesiger Erfolg. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, dass schon jemals ein ausländischer Musiker die Möglichkeit für einen Auftritt hatte an diesem Anlass, der von vielen berühmten Singer-Songwritern getragen wird. Super Rolf, mach weiter so.
Am Dienstagabend war es dann Zeit für die Two Rock Band. Seit einigen Jahren gibt es am Montag- und Dienstagabend in zwei Clubs am Broadway die International Show. Hier haben Bands aus Australien, England, Kanada die Möglichkeit, ihr Können zu zeigen und ich kann Euch sagen, das Niveau ist sehr hoch. Dieses Jahr wurde auch die Two Rock Band eingeladen und auch hier war die Schweizer Gang natürlich vor Ort. Es war ein sehr guter Auftritt und seit neustem darf sich die Band „erste fürstliche Liechtensteinische Country Band“ nennen. Ich bin sicher, der Fürst wäre stolz gewesen auf den Auftritt seiner Band. Auch Billy Walker von Aristo Media lobte die Band in den höchsten Tönen und so hoffen wir, dass auch 2014 wieder schweizerische oder liechtensteinische Country-Musiker an dieser Show teilnehmen dürfen.
Das Highlight von jedem Tag sind dann die Shows im LP Field. Was für ein Line-up, alle grossen Stars waren da und ich bin sicher, wären die Shows noch länger, hatten wir auch noch Alan Jackson oder Kenny Chesney gesehen. Aber auch so hatten wir jeden Tag so viel Musik, dass wir Schweizer oft fast überfordert waren, da die Abendshows manchmal über eine Stunde länger dauerten als angesagt. Jeder Country-Music-Star zeigte sich von der besten Seite und dankte dem Publikum, dass es seine CDs kauft und sie unterstützt. An den vier Abenden sahen wir unter anderem Taylor Swift, Luke Brian, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert und Blake Shelton, um nur einige zu nennen.
Wer dann nach Mitternacht noch nicht genug hatte von der Musik, konnte sich bis morgens um drei in den Clubs verweilen und dort noch mehr Musik geniessen.
It was a great party, the CMA Music Festival 2013. We were a group of some 60 country music fans from Switzerland who had travelled to Nashville to enjoy the festival. According to the CMS, there were approximately 80'000 visitors per day which is about the maximal capacity of the event. The dimensions of the event are breath-taking, especially if you’re not American and thus not used to festivals of this size.
The weather was somewhat unstable this year, just as it was back home in Switzerland. We had everything from sunshine with thunderstorms to mild climate. The music was great all the way, and we enjoyed not being fried at the open air stage Riverfront.
The first show of this year’s CMA Music Festival on the Riverfront stage was by Sara Evans. Every day, there were newcomers on the program, as well as household names, many of which we’ve been able to see back home in Switzerland. The final gig should have been by Ronnie Milsap, but the blind musician did not show up without giving any explanations. So, Lonestar closed the event on the Riverfront Stage with their „old“ singer Richie McDonald.
Before the main event, the smaller special concerts are well worth coming to Nashville. On Tuesday night, the Opry had a great line-up, featuring Carrie Underwood and the Rascall Flatts. The so called Grand Ole Opry is actually the new Opry, the old Opry will always be the Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman hosts the annual Mary Stuart Late Night Show, a must for every Swiss country music lover. What I liked best about this years’ edition were the Mavericks in their original line-up and with their signature sound.
We were also in for a Swiss surprise. Rolf Fritschi had the rare chance to perform two songs at the fan club party of Billy Yates, being backed up by his fantastic band. What an honor for Rolf! The Swiss fans cheered loudly, the performance was a huge success for Rolf. I can’t recall another Swiss musician being allowed to appear at this event that is famous for hosting great singer-songwriters. Great job, Rolf, keep up the good work!
On Tuesday night, it was time for the Two Rock Band. For a few years, two clubs on Broadway have been hosting the International Show on Monday and Tuesday. Here, bands from Australia, England or Canada get the opportunity to show their talent, and I can tell you that the level is quite high. This year, the Two Rock Band was among the invited performers, and of course, the whole Swiss gang was there as well. It was a very good performance, and lately, the band has been allowed to call itself „erste fürstliche Liechtensteinische Country Band“. I am sure that the prince would have been proud of the appearance of his band. Also, Billy Walker of Aristo Music spoke favorably of the band. I am positive that we will have other Swiss bands or bands from Liechtenstein taking part in that show in 2014.
The highlights of every day are the shows on LP Field. What a line-up, all the big stars were there, and I am sure that if the shows had been longer, we would also have gotten to see Alan Jackson or Kenny Chesney. Still, we had so much music that sometimes, it was a bit too much for us when the night shows ran for an hour longer than scheduled. Every country music star gave a good account of himself and thanked the audience for buying his records and supporting him. On those four nights, we saw Taylor Swift, Luke Brian, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert und Blake Shelton, just to name a few.
Those who hadn’t gotten enough music yet by then could enjoy the clubs til 3am and listen to even more music there.
Blues Challenge Memphis, das ist eine Woche voller Blues und ein internationaler Blues-Wettbewerb der Extraklasse. Dieses Jahr hat auch der Schweizer Blues-Musiker Fabian Anderhub teilgenommen. Leider war er etwas zu rockig, denn wie wir feststellen mussten, huldigen die meisten Darbietungen dem alten, urchigen Blues. So waren auch die Gewinner der diesjährigen Blues Challenge eher bodenständige Südstaaten-Blueser. Mir hat es super gefallen, denn ich liebe den Herz-Schmerz-Sound, vielleicht eine Frage des Alters!
Blues Challenge Memphis, that is a week filled with blues and a superb international Blues contest. Swiss blues man Fabian Anderhub joined this year, but unfortunately, his performance was a little too rocking: Apparently, this is still a scene that prefers the good ole traditional Blues: Most of the Challenge winners were down to earth southern bluesmen. I liked the music a lot - I love the sentimental sound, it must have to do with my age..
Mardi Gras. Obschon ich mein Herz schon lange an New Orleans verloren habe, hatte ich noch nie die Gelegenheit, den Mardi Gras zu besuchen. Dieses Jahr ist es mir endlich gelungen, und wir genossen die Umzüge von gesicherten Logen mit Sitzplätzen aus, die man problemlos und nicht zu teuer kaufen kann, und staunten nicht schlecht über die Party, die da in den Strassen von New Orleans gefeiert wurde. Mir war das Ganze etwas zu wild. Vor allem werden die Beads von den Mardi-Gras-Wagen mit einer Wucht in die Besuchermenge geworfen, die manchen Gast fast bewusstlos schlagen könnte. Man muss aufpassen, dass man nicht zu Schaden kommt und trotzdem genügend Beads (das sind farbige Glaskugel-Halsketten) ergattern kann, denn je mehr man sammeln kann, desto grösser das Ansehen.
Mardi Gras. Although my heart has long been set on New Orleans, I've never had the opportunity to come and join Mardi Gras. This year, I finally got the chance, and we enjoyed the parades from secured boxes that you can easily book in advance and that don't cost a fortune. We marveled at the party that was celebrated in the streets of New Orleans. It was a bit too wild for my taste: The beads that are being thrown into the crowd from the party mobiles come with such a force that you have to watch out! Still, you want to collect as many beads as possible...
Das Jazz & Heritage Festival wird sicher mein Favorit in New Orleans bleiben, denn so viel gute Musik kombiniert mit alter Hippie-Mentalität „sitting, relaxing and enjoying“, das findet man nicht mehr häufig. Noch dazu ist das Essen super lecker, was will man da noch mehr.
The Jazz & Heritage Festival will always be my favorite in New Orleans. There is so much great music, such a cool hippie vibe, „sitting, relaxing and enjoying“, something that's hard to find these days. Also, the food is superior - what more could you possibly wish for.
Muscle Shoals. Eine ganz neue Reisedestination für Musikliebhaber habe ich im Staat Alabama entdeckt. Wer kennt nicht das Cover von Chers LP „3614 Jackson Highway“? Diese LP wurde im berühmten Muscle Shoals Studio aufgenommen. Muscle Shoals ist meine Entdeckung 2013. Es kam mir vor, wie wenn ich in die „alte“ Musikgeschichte der 60er Jahre eintauchen würde. Überall hörte ich von Alben, die da in den verschiedenen berühmten Studios aufgenommen wurden und die wir alle kennen. Die Studios kann man heute noch besichtigen und Freunde der heutigen Country Music werden staunen, wer heute noch in diesen Studios seine CDs aufnimmt: Carie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill ….. Der Sound der Muscle Shoals Studios hatte damals auch die Rolling Stones nach Alabama geholt und man kann im Studio am 3614 Jackson Highway noch heute an der Toilettentüre die handgeschriebenen Zeilen des berühmten Songs „Wild Horses“ von Keith Richard nachlesen. Die Rolling Stones durften dazumal nicht öffentlich mitteilen, dass ihr Album in Alabama aufgenommen worden war, da dies gemäss ihrem Vertrag nicht statthaft war. Erst Jahre kam es aus und wurde eine grosse Sensation in den Musikmedien.
Muscle Shoals hat noch mehr zu bieten, z.B. das Helen Keller Haus. Helen Keller war das erste blinde Kind, das Blindenschrift lernte, studieren konnte und auf der ganzen Welt Vorträge hielt zum Leben in der Dunkelheit. Helen Kellers Leben wurde mehrfach verfilmt und ihre Bücher wurden weltberühmt.
Wer also eine Südstaaten-Rundreise plant, sollte Muscle Shoals unbedingt in sein Programm aufnehmen. Anschliessend kann man von Muscle Shoals auf dem berühmten Natchez Trace direkt nach Nashville fahren.

Muscle Shoals. I have discovered a new destination for the music lover in the state of Alabama. We all remember the cover of the Cher album, "3614 Jackson Highway". This LP has been recorded at the famous Muscle Shoals Studios. Muscle Shoals is my 2013 discovery. It felt like reliving the music history of the Sixties. Everywhere I heard about albums that we all know that have been recorded in the various famous studios. You can still visit all theses studios. Country music fans will be surprised to find out who is recording their albums in the Muscle Shoals studios: Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill ….. Back in the days, the sound of Muscle Shoals Studios lured the Rolling Stones to Alabama. You can still see Keith Richards' handwriting on the toilet wall of the studio at 3614 Jackson Highway. Due to their contract at the time, the Stones were not allowed to announce where they had recorded the album. But when it was made official years later, it was a major issue in the music press.
Muscle Shoals has even more to offer, e. g. the Helen Keller house. Hellen Keller was the first blind child to learn Braille, to be able to study and then went on to tell the world about her life in darkness. Helen Keller’s life was made into a movie, and her books became world famous.
Anyone planning a Dixie trip should include Muscle Shoals in his or her itinerary. From Muscle Shoals, you can continue to Nashville on the famous Natchez Trace.
