Maya in Fort Myers. Der Juni ist für Maya Reisezeit. Auf Einladung der Outrigger-Hotelgruppe hat sie den wunderschönen, breiten Sandstrand in Fort Myers Beach am Golf von Mexiko an der südwestlichen Küste von Florida genossen. Sie war begeistert. Ft. Myers liegt an der floridianischen Westküste, am Golf von Mexiko, zwischen Naples im Süden und Tampa im Norden. Der Caloosahatchee River fliesst ins Meer, und vor der Küste liegen mehrere Inseln, darunter das Muschelsucher-Paradies Sanibel. Auch bei Golfspielern ist die Gegend um Ft. Myers sehr beliebt – nirgendwo in den USA ist die Dichte an Golfplätzen höher. Ft. Myers war einst ein richtiges Fort, als die Weissen hier im 19. Jahrhundert gegen die Seminolen kämpften. Als die Kriege vorbei waren, entstand schon bald eine kleine Stadt, die sich zu einer beliebten Winterresidenz für reiche Amerikaner aus dem Norden des Landes, so genannte Snowbirds, entwickelte. Zwei Herren, die im Winter am Ufer des Caloosahatchee wohnten und arbeiteten, waren Henry Ford und Thomas Edison, Nachbarn und gute Freunde. Wir haben Ft. Myers also indirekt die Glühlampe, den Phonographen und den Motel T Ford zu verdanken.
Aber auch ohne jeglichen historischen Hintergrund ist Ft. Myers einen Besuch wert. Maya war begeistert vom meilenlangen, breiten Sandstrand und vom Outrigger Hotel, das direkt am Meer liegt und von dem aus sie am Morgen den Delfinen zuschaute und am Abend den wohl schönsten Sonnenuntergang der Welt bewunderte. Die Outrigger-Kette, ein mehr als 60 Jahre alter Familienbetrieb, ist im asiatischen und im Pazifikraum am stärksten vertreten (Hawaii, Fidji, etc.). Doch auch in Nordamerika merken immer mehr Touristen, dass sich hinter den oft nur mit drei Sternen bewerteten Anlagen tolle Angebote verstecken. Die Zimmer sind funktional, dafür liegen die Hotels oft an bester Lage direkt am Meer. Besser so als umgekehrt: Wer möchte schon Ferien am Meer machen und dann in einem Zimmer mit allem Schnickschnack sitzen, ohne je aufs Wasser zu sehen? Es waren ein paar Tage reine Erholung, bevor die Reise weiter ging ans CMA Fest in Nashville. Maya weiss schon jetzt: Ft. Myers Beach, das ist der Tipp für Florida Badeferien!
In June, Maya spent a few days at beautiful Ft. Myers Beach. The Outrigger hotel chain had invited her to look at their hotel on the gulf coast of Florida and the endless white sand beach. She was enchanted. Ft. Myers is where the Caloosahatche runs into the Gulf of Mexico, halfway between Naples and Tampa. Connecting the cities on the western coast is scenic US 41, a.k.a. Tamiami Trail. Maya went there to take a look at the Outrigger Beach Resort – the family-owned chain that has been in business for more than 60 years had invited her. Outrigger has most of its hotels and resorts in the Asian-Pacific-area; some beautiful locations in Hawaii, all at affordable prices. The Outrigger in Ft. Myers Beach sticks to the same philosophy: No fancy stuff in the room, but lots of views instead. Who wants to pay loads of money for a posh room on the Ocean, never catching a glimpse of the waves?
Ft. Myers started out as a real fort in the middle of the 19th century, when the whites fought the Seminoles. Soon there was a small town, and it fast became a favourite hang-out for the snowbirds, wealthy people from the northern United States seeking sunshine in winter. Among them were Henry Ford and Thomas Edison who owned adjacent lots by the Caloosahatchee. We owe Ft. Myers the Model T Ford, the phonograph and the light bulb. Both homes can be visited today and are well worth the tour. Shell collectors and golf players also love the area around Ft. Myers. Beach aficionados head out to Sanibel Island to gather shells, and golf players find that there are more golf courses here than anywhere else in the United States.
CMA Music Festival Nashville. Nach diesen Ferientage an der Golfküste von Florida reiste Maya weiter nach Nashville, wo sie die 40. Ausgabe des CMA Fest besuchte, gemeinsam mit einer Gruppe von 30 Schweizer Countryfans. Auch der Live-Besuch einer Radiosendung durfte nicht fehlen. Jedes Jahr im Juni ist Nashville nicht nur die Hauptstadt der Country Music, sondern auch Schauplatz des CMA Fest, des grössten Treffpunkts der Country-Stars und ihrer Fans. Wie jedes Jahr begleitete Maya auch dieses Jahr eine Gruppe nach Nashville. Musik gab es während dieser Zeit, aber auch Ausflüge in die Umgebung, Kulturelles und Historisches wie den Besuch der wunderschönen Fonantel Mansion, wo einst Barbara Mandrell wohnte. Es gibt kaum mehr einen Ort, wo der Geist der alten Südstaaten noch so präsent ist wie dort in diesem Blockhaus.
Das CMA Fest wartete wie üblich mit hochkarätiger Musik und 40'000 Fans auf – Brad Paisley brachte als Überraschung drei Gründungsmitglieder der Supergruppe Alabama auf die Bühne, und die Auftritte von Stars wie Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Josh Turner, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis oder Chris Young folgten Schlag auf Schlag. Am Billboard Country Music Summit hörte Maya spannende Interviews u.a. mit Carrie Underwood (lesen...) und Kenny Chesney (lesen...).
Die tollen Tage voller Musik wurden von einem Besuch im legendären Bluebird Café und einer Radioshow von WSIX mit Slam Duncan abgerundet, bei der die ganze Schweizer Gruppe live dabei sein durfte. Zum Abschluss ihres Amerika-Trips reiste Maya anschliessend noch für ein paar Tage nach Chicago, wo sie vor allem wieder von der Bootstour ganz begeistert war, die die spannende Architektur der „windy city“ von einer ganz anderen Seite zeigte.
After a few days of not really doing a hell of a lot besides walking endless beaches and watching breath taking sunsets, Maya travelled north to join not only the 40th edition of CMA Fest but also a group of some 30 Swiss country music lovers. They even attended a live radio show. Each year in June, Nashville isn’t only Country capital of the world, but also home to CMA Fest, the industry’s largest get-together. As she does every year, Maya joined the party together with a group of some 30 Swiss die-hard country fans. There was lots of music, but not only: Maya took her group to Fontanel Mansion, former home of Barbara Mandrell, a beautiful southern home and a place where the old south is more alive than anywhere else.
CMA Fest offered its 40’000 fans a high octane mix of the best country music has to offer these days: Brad Paisley as a surpris e invited three original members of Alabama on stage, and Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Josh Turner, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis and Chris Young did their shows for an enchanted and enthusiastic crowd. At Billboard Country Music Summit, Maya was able to follow very interesting interviews with Carrie Underwood (read in German...), Kenny Chesney (read in German...) and more.
There were also a visit at the legendary Bluebird Café and a live radio show at Nashville’s WSIX that the whole group was allowed to attend. Before flying back home, Maya went north to Chicago where a boat tour of windy city’s architecture made a big impression on her.
Trucker & Country Festival Interlaken. Kaum war Maya wieder zuhause, verbrachte sie ein Wochenende in Interlaken am Internationalen Trucker und Country Festival – als hätte sie in Nashville noch nicht genug Musik gehört! Interlaken ist wirklich ein idyllischer Ort – und für Maya, die Heimweh-Bernerin, auch ein Stück Heimat. Zum 18. Mal fand hier Ende Juni das internationale Country und Truckerfestival statt. Maya reiste schon am Donnerstag an, um bei einem Treffen von Medien und Organisatoren dabeizusein. Danach folgte ein hochkarätiges Musikprogramm mit Lorrie Morgan, Carlene Carter, Raul Malo und Heidi Newfield. Maya machte ein Wochenende lang den Spagat zwischen Kulturen: Am Abend stand sie (die Sitzplätze des Anlasses sind schmerzhaft reduziert worden) im Festzelt, tagsüber genoss sie das Spa im Hotel Jungfrau Victoria, das den Whirlpool mit der wohl schönsten Aussicht auf die Berner Bergwelt bietet.
As soon as she was back home in Switzerland, Maya drove to Interlaken to attend the International Trucker and Country Festival – as if there hadn’t been in enough music in Nashville. Interlaken is a most idyllic place, nestled between two lakes (hence the name) and with a great mountain scenery. Its also almost home to Maya who’s originally from the Berne area. She went there for the 18th International Trucker and Country Festival. On Thursday, before the music started officially, she was there for a meeting of press and promoters. Then, it was two nights of great concerts by Lorrie Morgan, Carlene Carter, the former Maverick Raul Malo, and Heidi Newfield. Maya loved it – except for the fact that the venue has been changed to almost standing-room only which can be tough on you body – especially if you’ve just been chasing around Nashville for days. While the evenings were spent in the big tent, Maya enjoyed the Spa of the great Jungfrau Victoria during daytime. It’s hard to find a hotel that has a whirlpool with a more impressive view.
MTI Reise nach Schweden. Schon bald wartet noch mehr amerikanische Country-Music auf Maya und ihre Kunden: Vom 9. bis 11. August veranstaltet sie eine Reise nach Schweden. Dort tritt der Superstar Alan Jackson auf. Alan Jackson ist einer der ganz Grossen der Countryszene – und mit mehr als 30 Nummer-1-Hites und über 50 Millionen verkauften CDs einer der Erfolgreichsten. Eigentlich erstaunlich, dass er trotz des anhaltenden Erfolgs in Amerika auch immer wieder nach Europa kommt. So auch diesen Sommer. Maya hat für denjenigen Auftrittsort, der von der Schweiz aus am besten zu erreichen ist, Tickets organisiert: Eskilstuna ist ein Vorort von Stockholm und hat neben dem Konzert auch viele Restaurants, historische Schmiedewerkstätten, eine idyllische Lage am Fluss zu bieten. Mehr als Grund genug für eine Reise! Es hat noch einige wenige Plätze.
There’s more great music to come. This time, Maya isn’t leaving the continent, though from August 9 to 11 will take a group of music lovers to Sweden. Alan Jackson is playing. Alan Jackson is one of country music’s giants. He has more than 30 number 1 hits to his name and has sold over 50 million records. Although he has plenty of success back home, he never forgets his European fans. In August, he’s coming back to good ole Europe – but not to Switzerland. So Maya has picked the closest and prettiest venue and organised a trip there. It’s Eskilstuna, on the outskirts of Stockholm, a charming old missionary town with ancient forges, pretty restaurants by the river and a scenic old part of town called Gamla Stan. It’s well worth going there for the weekend.
Superband Jetty Road in Uitikon. Es muss ja nicht immer Amerika sein. Das fand auch Maya, als sie kurz entschlossen die australische Superband Jetty Road für einen Abend in Uitikon buchte (28. September 2011 im Uediker Saal). Es wird tolle Musik geben, eine Tanzfläche – und natürlich viele Infos über Australien. Eines Tages lernten sich vier junge Leute während des Studiums am Music College in Melbourne kennen und beschlossen, gemeinsam Musik zu machen. 2005 erschien ihr Debut-Album "Full Circle", und schon bald kletterten ihre Songs die Charts hinauf. Die Zwillingsschwestern Lee und Paula Bowman und ihre beiden Kollegen Julian Sammut und Simon Ross fingen an, auch in Kanada und Europa bekannt zu werden. Die vielen Auszeichnungen, die sie in Australien einheimsten, halfen ihnen dabei. Nun kommen sie in die Schweiz und geben auch Uitikon die Ehre: Musik, eine grosse Tanzfläche und natürlich viele spannende Infos zum sechstgrössten Staat der Erde, dem „südlichen Land“, so die Bedeutung des lateinischen Namens “terra australis”.
It doesn’t always have to be the USA. That’s probably what Maya thought when she on the spur of the moment booked Jetty Road from AUS. The quartet has won all the prizes to be won in their home county. Now they’re setting out to conquer Europe. On September 28, 2011, there’ll be lots of fun and dancing, and of course lots of info about Australia. One day, two identical twins, Lee and Paula Bowman, met Julian Sammut and Simon Ross whilst studying at Music College in Melbourne, Australia. They started writing and recording together, releasing their debut album “Full Circle” in 2005. Since then, Jetty Road have won all the awards Australia has to offer. Now, they have set out to conquer good old Europe. On September 28th, there’ll be music, a big dancefloor and of course infos about Australia at Uediker Saal in Uitikon. Don’t forget when you hear Jetty Road on the radio: Uitikon is where you heard them first!
